Glory

Review: Glory is one of, if not the best Civil war film ever made. Glory tells the story of the first black regiment in the U.S. Army's history. Underpaid, ill-equipped, and facing certain death the regiment first fights racism and then Confederacy. Matthew Brodrick looks a little unsure of himself in this film, and this is exactly what his character needed to demonstrate. Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption, Seven) is wonderful as usual. Denzel Washington's performance is blistering and he won a much deserved Oscar. There is a scene where he is getting reprimanded, and as the whip cracks against his back, he stares at Brodrick in defiance, and you can see the tears welling in his eyes. It's really an unforgettable scene. The film also contains Oscar-winning cinematography by Freddie Francis (The Elephant Man, The Straight Story) and a awesome musical score by James Horner (Braveheart, Field of Dreams). -Review by Aaron Caldwell
